Born in the last century into a family of amateur musicians, Zoé Frédérique Oulevey grew up
surrounded by choral music. She has practised choral music for most of her life, singing regularly in various ensembles. A few basic piano lessons gave her a grounding in music theory, harmony and counterpoint, which she supplemented as a self-taught musician through regular analysis of the scores she sang, as well as through constructive discussions of her works with musicians in her circle.
For a long time, the melodies that sprang to life within her remained locked in her mind, for fear of revealing her true nature. In recent years, she has finally dared to be herself and to write and compose.
Her composition is primarily conceived horizontally, with verticality serving more as a
guide for the melodic lines than as an end in itself. In her choral works, Zoé pays particular attention to providing beautiful melodic lines for each register. Her conception of music lies halfway between modality and tonality. This music is, however, intended for a contemporary ear, accustomed to harmonic richness.
The choral pieces are always guided by the text, the intelligibility of which is essential. This is why the composition favours homophonic passages and adapts the rhythm of the melodies in the repetitions or between verses to the rhythm of the text.
Note for English speaking chefs and choirs
Although the music and the words are intimately linked in my works, English adaptation could be envisaged as a challenge for the poetess. Dare to ask.
